After a brutal winter and a short, yet still allergy inducing spring, it looks like summer is finally on its way. While summer may conjure up such images as swimming pools and beaches, baseball games, or steaming hot subway stations, I tend to anticipate summer more from a foodie/New York native's perspective. It is in this glorious season when the Coquito men (and women) and the Piragueros start selling their delicious icy treats, white vans and fruit stands start cropping up on the side of the roads, and finally (and perhaps most deliciously) summer produce starts its season.

The same is true for summer strawberries. I often tell whoever is in earshot that I would willingly and gladly fast from strawberries for the rest of the year, if only to experience their juicy goodness the way nature intended them to be. I've been disappointed with watery, tasteless strawberries far too many times from the fall through the spring to pretend that they do the job, anyway.
See! Look how beautiful they are. Amazing. |
So tell me, what are some of your favorite summer foods (and why)?
Hmm, I'm not sure its a summer fruit, but a cold mango is pretty amazing or cold tangerines... either way cold fruit in the summer...win! This blog got me more excited about fruit than about the treats you mentioned up top. Great job, nature just won me over again!
ReplyDeleteGood call, Bel! I LOVE mangoes, especially when they're super sweet. I also like them dusted with a little cayenne and salt when I'm feeling adventurous. I agree completely...there's nothing like a good cold fruit in the summer.
ReplyDeleteHAha Yeahh I love those cold snacks during the summer!! Especially the Ice shaving crushed ice drink stands! some even add caramel to it! I know what you mean bout the strawberries Genetically Modified Strawberries!! AHHhhh!! Run for the Hills or in this case, to a Garden for fresh real ones. lol My Fav. Summer food is ummm well not really a summer-food but it makes me feel happy in the summer... Philly Cheesesteak! lol
ReplyDeleteDefinitely barbecue foods. burgers and hot dogs right off the grill, and vegetables too! I have an awesome recipe for grilled mushrooms that you can put on the blog, if you like. :)
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Jess. The whole barbecue experience is what I love most about summer. However, when not in the immediate proximity of a grill, I could always go for an amazing salad like they have at Sweet Greens, Chop't, or Mix't Greens. Those places are a bit expensive though, so I vote you put up a post on delicious salad making!
